Be part of Cayman’s maritime story
Become a member, volunteer your time, support an activity or help preserve a piece of Cayman’s maritime history. There are many ways to take part in the work of the Cayman Catboat Club Association and Cayman Maritime Heritage Foundation.
Join the Cayman Catboat Club
Membership helps support the preservation, sailing and continued use of Cayman’s traditional catboats, while connecting members with the community that keeps the tradition alive.
Members can become involved in Club activities including sailing, regattas, boat maintenance, demonstrations, educational activities, community events and other programmes as opportunities arise.
Free membership
Complimentary Cayman Catboat Club membership is available to eligible Caymanian retirees and members of the Cayman Islands Seafarers Association.
Please contact the Club for current membership categories, eligibility requirements and application information.
Support the Maritime Heritage Foundation
The Cayman Maritime Heritage Foundation works to research, record, preserve and share the maritime history of the Cayman Islands.
You do not need to be a historian to contribute. Researchers, seafarers, descendants of maritime families, photographers, writers, educators, craftspeople and anyone with an interest in Cayman’s relationship with the sea can help strengthen the historical record.
Participation opportunities will depend on the Foundation’s current projects, research priorities, events and programmes.
Volunteer your time
Tell us what interests you, what skills you would like to share and how much time you have available. You do not need specialist maritime knowledge to volunteer.
Practical & event support
Boat maintenance, event preparation, race-day assistance, visitor support, displays and community activities.
Research & creative support
Historical research, identifying photographs, transcription, oral histories, photography, video, writing, design and digital projects.
Behind the scenes
Administration, organising records, communications, membership support and other work that helps the organisations operate.
Share photographs, records or memories
Do you have photographs, letters, diaries, vessel records, drawings, newspaper clippings, documents or family memories connected with Cayman’s maritime past?
Even a small piece of information can be valuable. Identifying a person, vessel, location or event in an old photograph may help connect records that would otherwise remain incomplete.
What should I tell you?
Start with a brief description of what you have. Where possible, include:
- Names of people, vessels or organisations.
- Approximate dates.
- Locations.
- How the material came into your possession.
- Who created or owns the original material, if known.
- Any story or family knowledge associated with it.
Please contact the Foundation before delivering original material or sending large collections of digital files. Suitable arrangements can then be made for review, scanning or transfer.
Ownership, permission & credit
Making an enquiry or showing material to the Foundation does not automatically transfer ownership or give permission for it to be published.
Where material is accepted for copying, preservation, publication, exhibition or research use, the Foundation will record relevant ownership, attribution and permission information. Any restrictions agreed with the contributor should also be documented.
Photography & media volunteers
Photographers, videographers and other media volunteers can help document races, restoration work, public programmes, interviews and community activities.
If you would like to photograph or film an activity on behalf of the Club or Foundation, contact the organising team beforehand so that access, coverage, file delivery, credit and intended use can be agreed.
Volunteer photographers and creators should be credited where practical, subject to the arrangements agreed for the particular project or event.
Not sure where you fit in?
Tell us what interests you and whether your enquiry relates to the Cayman Catboat Club, the Cayman Maritime Heritage Foundation or both. We can point you in the right direction.
